Yossi & Jagger ( Hebrew יוסי וג'אגר) is an Israeli film about the love of two Israeli soldiers directed by Eytan Fox from 2002.

action

A train of Israeli soldiers is on duty on the border with Lebanon. The platoon leader is the prudent and taciturn Lieutenant Yossi, his deputy "Jagger" is a fun-loving young lieutenant and actually Yossis' exact opposite. A soldier on the train is in love with him and nobody suspects that he and Yossi are lovers. Although homosexuality in itself is no longer a problem with the Israeli Armed Forces , a relationship between two officers of the same unit would inevitably lead to the separation of the two, as their ability to make judgments could be impaired by working in one unit. That's why the two try to keep this a secret until the end of their service life. After a Lt. Colonel gave Yossi's platoon a dangerous mission, the unit celebrated an exuberant party before the mission. The patrol waited in vain for terrorists in an ambush all night and was finally ordered to retreat. Only then do the soldiers realize that they have been ambushed themselves: A mine explodes and kills Jagger. Yossi is not allowed to show his pain and has to bring the news of the death of the son together with his comrade Jagger's parents.

Reviews

  • "A great film that proves: Less is more!" (LA Times)
  • “A tender, sad love story, with a previously unseen look at the Israeli military: no heroism, but routine, fear of death, power, sex and the longing for little glimmers of hope. (...) Just because of the wonderful actors and the music, it's worth watching. "(ZDF)
  • "Touching love and war ballad about the forbidden relationship between two soldiers." ( Hamburger Morgenpost )

Awards

The film was awarded numerous prizes, including a .:

  • Audience Award at the Turin International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival (2002)
  • Ohad Knoller for Best Actor at the Tribeca Film Festival (2003)
  • Best Feature Film at the Enchanted International Queer Film Festival (2003)

Others

The film had a lot of success in Israel despite its theme. Yehuda Levi, who plays Jagger, is known in Israel as the star of a soap opera and a crush of teenagers. A well-known hit by Israeli pop icon Rita served as the basis for the hit single for the film .

The sequel film Yossi (2012) (with the same actor) 10 years later reflects the progressive liberalization in dealing with sexual minorities in the Israeli army.
