I Love You Phillip Morris (English for "I love you, Phillip Morris") is a 2009 comedy film based on the story of Steven Jay Russell and starring Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor .

action

After a traffic accident, the father of the family Steven Russell finally decides to live out his homosexuality, which had been kept secret until then, and begins a dissolute life in Florida. Since this turns out to be very costly, Steven begins to stay afloat with frauds and fake accidents and the resulting insurance sums. After a while, however, this is revealed and he ends up in prison , where he meets Phillip Morris, who is also gay in the prison library. The two fall in love and Steven succeeds in being transferred to a cell with Phillip through various bribes.

However, Steven is later moved to another prison and released shortly afterwards. Using his new freedom, he tries to get Phillip out of prison as well, which he finally succeeds through various petitions. The two move in together. However, Stevens' standard of living, or the standard of living he would like to offer Phillip, turns out to be too high to be legally funded, and he starts cheating again. As a result, he was sentenced to further prison terms, as was Phillip for alleged complicity. In order to free himself and Phillip, he fakes his own death and can also free Phillip as a "lawyer". However, he is found out again and this time he is sentenced to life imprisonment. In the credits it is learned that Phillip was released in 2006 and that Steven has to spend 23 hours a day alone in his cell.

Reviews

“The story of a con artist based on real events strikes a balance between over-the-top comedy and drama. The courage to stage a gay love affair as a romantic star cinema is also counteracted by the exaggeratedly ironic gesture. "

"Sometimes you get the impression that the director, screenplay and cast have all cobbled together their version of homosexuality from a heterosexual perspective."

- Kathrin Häger in the film service No. 9/2010 from April 26, 2010 (review No. 10662)
