Out in the Dark - Love breaks boundaries (Original title: Out in the Dark / עלטה / ظلام) is an Israeli drama film . The premiere took place in September 2012 at the Toronto Film Festival , in Israel the film was shown on February 28, 2013. Michael Mayer, who comes from Israel and lives in Los Angeles, made his directorial debut with Out in the Dark . The main roles were played by Nicholas Jacob (Nimr Mashrawi) and Michael Aloni (Roy Sheffer).
The 96-minute drama tells the story of a homosexual love affair between two men who are on different sides of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict .

Nimr is an ambitious Palestinian psychology student who dreams of a scholarship abroad. In a gay bar in Tel Aviv he met Roy, a good-looking Israeli lawyer. The two fall in love. When Nimr was given the opportunity to attend a seminar at Tel Aviv University and thus received an Israeli pass, the two men were able to see each other regularly and deepen their relationship. Nimr lives in the West Bank with his mother, sister and older brother, who is head of the family after the death of his father. In his Palestinian homeland, Nimr keeps his sexual orientation a secret, as he faces rejection and violence if he comes out. One day Mustafa, another homosexual Palestinian friend of Nimr's, who is staying illegally in Tel Aviv, is picked up by the Israeli secret service and forcibly brought back to the West Bank. There, Nimr witnesses Mustafa being murdered by a group of Palestinian militants, including Nimr's brother. The young student is desperate and realizes that he too is threatened with violence if his sexual orientation is revealed. Shortly thereafter, employees of the Israeli secret service spoke to Nimr. You want to win him over as a spy. As a means of exerting pressure, the secret service people withdrew his permit and threatened to come out to his family if he did not work with them. Nimr finds himself trapped between the fronts. Without a permit, he can no longer see Roy and cannot continue his studies in Tel Aviv. At the same time, he feels obliged to his family. Despite all difficulties and problems, Nimr and Roy fight for their love ...

The film and director Michael Mayer have been nominated for prizes at the Chicago International Film Festival 2012, the Hamburg Film Festival 2012, the Naples Film Festival 2013, the Seattle International Film Festival 2013 and the Toronto International Film Festival 2012, among others. He also won prizes at the Mexican Film Festival in Guadalajara in 2013 and the International Film Festival in Haifa in 2012.
