Gus Van Sant
Gus Green Van Sant, Jr. (Born July 24, 1952 in Louisville , Kentucky ) is an American film director , film producer , photographer and musician . He is considered a specialist in films about maladjusted teenagers and young adults.
Life
Gus Green Van Sant graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design . He made his first feature film in 1985: Mala Noche is a film about an American's unrequited love for a young Mexican immigrant.
In 1989 Drugstore Cowboy was born , a road movie about criminal teen drug addicts ( Matt Dillon , Kelly Lynch ). In My Own Private Idaho (1991) is about the friendship of a prostitute for son of the mayor ( Keanu Reeves and River Phoenix ). In Even Cowgirls Get the Blues , two young girls ( Uma Thurman , Rain Phoenix ) take power on a beauty farm, and in To Die For (1995) a young TV presenter ( Nicole Kidman ) persuades three teenagers to kill their husband.
Van Sant had his commercial breakthrough in 1997 with Good Will Hunting , in which a college professor discovered the scientific talents of a young cleaner ( Robin Williams and Matt Damon ). For this he was nominated for an Oscar for "Best Director". This was followed in 1998 by a remake of the Hitchcock classic Psycho . In Forrester - Found! (2000), an aging writer takes on the role of mentor for an African-American student ( Sean Connery and Rob Brown ).
After these excursions into the Hollywood mainstream, a trilogy followed, inspired by avant-garde directors such as Philippe Garrel and Béla Tarr , dealing with the subject of death. Gerry follows two young men ( Casey Affleck and Matt Damon ) on a journey into the desert from which both will not return. Elephant (2003) is a depressing film with long camera angles that deals with the history and course of a school massacre. Van Sant was awarded the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2003. The trilogy ended in 2005 with the rock and roll drama Last Days , for which he was inspired by Kurt Cobain 's last few days .
In 2007 Van Sant was again represented in the competition at the 60th Cannes Film Festival with his film Paranoid Park and received the special jubilee award (Prix Du 60th Anniversaire) for the film . In 2009, more than ten years after Good Will Hunting , he received his second Oscar nomination for directing the political biography Milk .
Van Sant made literary collages with William S. Burroughs ( Thanksgiving Prayer, 1991) and Allen Ginsberg ( Ballad of the Skeletons, 1997), music videos for David Bowie (1993, 2002) and Candlebox (1996). He also wrote the videos for Under the Bridge and Desecration Smile as well as the booklet photography for the album Stadium Arcadium by the band Red Hot Chili Peppers .
In 1992 he was awarded the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) award in the US state of Oregon for courage and creative perspectives for freedom of expression.
Van Sant wrote the scripts for most of his earlier films himself. He also wrote the novel Pink . A compilation of his photographs was published under the title 108 Portraits . He released several music albums: Gus Van Sant (1985) and 18 Songs About Golf (1997).
He lives openly gay in Portland , Oregon .
