The Canyons is an American erotic thriller from 2013 with Lindsay Lohan and the porn actor James Deen in the lead roles. Directed by Paul Schrader based on a script by Bret Easton Ellis .

The film premiered on August 2, 2013 after it came under heavy criticism for being banned from the Sundance Film Festival .

action

Christian is a film producer and has a relationship with the former actress Tara, with whom he regularly invites third sexual partners or even couples in order to have a more intense sex life. When the two meet with Ryan and Gina one evening, Christian is not yet aware that Tara is having an affair with Ryan and was even dating him a few years ago. When Christian slowly but surely finds out, Tara finds herself on a threatening, sexually charged journey: a journey through the dark side of human nature.

background

Pre-production

Braxton Pope, Bret Easton Ellis, and Paul Schrader were originally involved in the preproduction of a film project called Bait . But when the film lost its funding, the three wanted to make a less elaborate film. Ellis was thus directly involved in the work of the new script. The group decided to enable funding through crowdfunding at Kickstarter.com . Between May and June 2012, the film hit nearly $ 160,000, though the target was set at 100,000. The film's final budget was $ 250,000, of which the actors should earn just $ 100 a day.

In July it was announced that Brendan Canning would be contributing the music to the film. A few days later the official Facebook page went online, which contributed significantly to the promotion of the film. On July 24, it was announced that American Apparel would provide the cast with costumes and a wardrobe.

Casting

Pope asked Lindsay Lohan's manager if Lohan could take on the role of Cynthia, a yoga teacher. However, at a meeting with Pope and Paul Schrader, Lohan expressed her interest in the lead role. Two weeks later, Lohan was officially cast for the lead role after test shots. Pope justified this decision to MTV with the fact that Lohan was a charismatic actress and brought talent. She is the perfect cast in many ways. Fleur Saville was also considered as Tara.

Initially, producers considered Sean Brosnan as Christian. However, it was decided to look for a more unusual and unexpected cast for this role. Screenwriter Ellis came up with the porn actor James Deen . Pope eventually met with the performer and screen tests were made. Paul Schrader was always ambivalent about casting a porn actor in the lead role. Even after the surprisingly good test shots, Schrader was still skeptical, but was ultimately convinced by Pope and Ellis.

Filming and post production

Shooting started in July 2012 in the bar of the Chateau Marmont Hotel in Los Angeles . Some key scenes were filmed at designer Vitus Mataré's home in Malibu, California. Further filming took place at Century City Mall in Los Angeles, on the Santa Monica Promenade and near Amoeba Records on Sunset Boulevard .

The first cut of the film was 104 minutes long. In the end, numerous changes were made, but the film still ran too slowly. Ellis, Schrader and Pope had some inconsistencies regarding the final cut. In the end, Ellis went on to say that the movie is about 90 minutes long but felt like three hours. He would have had a noir thriller in mind while writing , but in the end Schrader would have made a typical Schrader film.

publication

The film was not admitted to the Sundance Film Festival , but was subsequently earmarked for sale by William Morris Endeavor in January 2013. The publication was eventually recalled. Quality problems were given as reasons. IFC Films eventually took the rights to the film for distribution. The publication followed on August 2nd at the IFC Center in New York City and the Bell Lightbox in Toronto . This was followed by publication on video on demand platforms. After all, the film should now be shown in the competition at the Venice International Film Festival .

In Germany, the film was released directly on DVD and Blu-ray on March 17, 2014 .
