occupation

The beginning of evil - Exorcist: Dominion is an American horror film from the year 2005 . Directed by Paul Schrader . The film is the fourth sequel to The Exorcist (1973), but designed as a prequel , i.e. prior to the first part.

action

The young Father Lankester Merrin, who has turned away from the Church and from the faith, takes part in the excavation of a Byzantine church in British East Africa in the late 1940s . The following events lead to Merrin's first encounter with the demon Pazuzu .

criticism

“Schrader focused on the conflicts of conscience of Catholic priests, which are also related to how and whether evil is to be accepted; a completely different reading of the material, which can be compared with the cinema version of the official prequel on DVD. "

background

Director Paul Schrader took over the project (working title Exorcist: Dominion ) from John Frankenheimer , who dropped out due to illness. The version delivered by Schrader displeased those responsible at Morgan Creek Productions , so that almost the entire film was shot again with a new script ( Alexi Hawley ) and a new director ( Renny Harlin ), but with an almost identical cast. Because Harlin's revised version, entitled Exorcist: The Beginning, failed both critics and audiences, the Schrader production studio made a limited budget available to complete his original version. This was shown in 2005 as Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist at festivals and with a small number of copies in cinemas.

William Peter Blatty , both the author of the novel and the screenplay for The Exorcist and the director and author of The Exorcist III , called Schrader's film "handsome, stylish and elegant".
