William Peter Blatty (born January 7, 1928 in New York City , New York - † January 12, 2017 in Bethesda , Maryland ) was an American author , screenwriter and director . Blatty became known worldwide through his novel The Exorcist from 1971, for which he also wrote the screenplay for the film adaptation.

Life

Blatty was the son of Lebanese parents of Christian faith. His father left the family when William was six years old. Since his mother was very religious, he visited u. a. a Catholic school in New York and studied at Georgetown University , a Jesuit school . He then studied English literature at George Washington University and graduated with a master's degree .

In the following years, as a soldier in the US Air Force stationed in Beirut , Lebanon, he also began to write and discovered his talent as a writer.

He had his breakthrough in 1959 with the book Which Way to Mecca, Jack? . In the 1960s William worked with the director Blake Edwards and wrote for his films such as u. a. What did you do in the war, Daddy? (What Did You Do in the War, Daddy?) The stories. However, he owes his worldwide fame to his book The Exorcist , which was successfully filmed in 1973. Blatty was not involved in the 1977 cinema sequel. In 1983 he wrote the sequel to the original story with Daszeichen (Legion) and in 1990 Der Exorcist III was created , which is based on Daszeichen (Legion) and was staged by Blatty personally.

William Peter Blatty was married and had seven children.
