Wisher became known above all through his longstanding collaboration with director James Cameron , with whom he is also very close privately. He met him in the 1970s in Brea , California , where Cameron had moved in 1971.

Wisher initially aspired to a career as an actor. He completed an acting training and appeared in smaller theater performances. 1977 Wisher starred in Michael Talbott's film The Reunion . Wisher, Cameron, and Randall Frakes produced their first short film Xenogenesis in 1978 , directed by Cameron and Frakes and starring Wisher.

Parallel turned Wisher strengthened to the script writing that he is largely self-taught taught. After disappointing experiences with his first scripts, Wisher was about to turn to writing when Cameron asked him to help on a project. In 1981 he had the idea for Terminator in a dream . He developed the first draft of the script together with Wisher and Frakes. Cameron later sold it to producer Gale Anne Hurd for $ 1 on condition that he was allowed to direct it. Cameron and Hurd continued to refine the script and received sole writing credits . Wisher was only named there as the author of additional dialogues. In the final film, however, he was also seen in a short role as a policeman whose head was hit against a car by the Terminator.

After the great success of the first part, Wisher and Cameron wrote the script for the sequel Terminator 2 - Judgment Day , which Cameron realized in 1991. In this Wisher again took on a small role; this time as a "silent tourist" photographing the battle between the T-800 and the T-1000 in the shopping center.

He later wrote the scripts for the films Judge Dredd , The 13th Warrior and Dominion: Exorcist - The Beginning of Evil . Wisher revised the screenplay for Die Hard 4.0 for 20th Century Fox and received a credit as an executive producer . Among other things, Wisher also wrote a treatment for Terminator 5 and a concept idea for Terminator 6 , both of which were not implemented.

In 2016 his screenplay for Hacked: No Life Is Safe was filmed by John Moore . Wisher acted as co-executive producer on this project.
