Boss is a US policy - drama series with Emmy award winner Kelsey Grammer in the title role, designed by Farhad Safinia . It was produced from 2011 to 2012 by Lionsgate Television in collaboration with Grammer's own production company Grammnet Productions for the US cable broadcaster Starz . It is about the mayor of Chicago who was recently diagnosed with degenerative nerve disease. It was first broadcast in the US on October 21, 2011 on Starz.

action

The series follows the life of Chicago Mayor Tom Kane, who was diagnosed with Lewy body dementia , a degenerative nerve disease. Since he wants to stay in his office despite the illness, he keeps it quiet. Only his doctor, Dr. Ella Harris knows about it. The deception also works because the people around him are too busy with their own lives. Kane's marriage to his wife Meredith is nothing but a means to an end. His closest advisors, Kitty O'Neill and Ezra Stone, are beginning to suspect something is wrong with the mayor, but they respect him too much to ask questions. Treasury Secretary Ben Zajac, on the other hand, is preoccupied with his own political ambitions to become the next governor of Illinois .

The German synchronization was created under the dialogue director of Ulrich Johannson by the synchronous company Antares Film GmbH in Berlin .

Production and broadcast

Farhad Safinia developed the series idea for Boss at the end of 2010 with the creative help of Kelsey Grammer and his production company Grammnet Productions . In November 2010, the script was presented to various cable channels, which led to fierce bidding competition. In the end, Starz won this bidding competition and commissioned eight episodes for the series. This continued the tradition at Starz of ordering series straight away without first producing a pilot episode . The casting for the series began in November 2010 with the engagement of Grammer as Mayor Tom Kane. Connie Nielsen was next on the show as Kane's wife Meredith Kane. This was followed by the casting of Jeff Hephner for the figure of Ben Zajac as Secretary of the Treasury of Illinois. The final cast was Hannah Ware as Tom Kane's estranged daughter Emma, and Kathleen Robertson and Martin Donovan as Kane's closest advisors, Kitty O'Neill and Ezra Stone. Filming for the first season began in and around Chicago in late April and ended in late July 2011.

The first eight-part season was broadcast from October 21 to December 9, 2011. The ratings for the first season remained almost consistently below half a million viewers. Only the series premiere and the season finale were seen by 660 and 510 thousand viewers, respectively. Even before the start of the series, Boss was extended for a second season, the broadcast of which began on August 17 and ended on October 19, 2012. Due to the lower ratings during the second season, Starz announced the discontinuation of the series in November 2012. However, the broadcaster and production studio are jointly exploring the possibility of bringing the open storylines to a close as part of a two-hour television film.

The German pay TV broadcaster FOX broadcast the two seasons of Boss between March 18 and July 22, 2013.
