occupation

Kids is a 1995 American film directed by Larry Clark ( Bully , Ken Park ).

The film describes the youth culture in New York in the 1990s, in which hip-hop , trend sports such as skateboarding , parties, drugs (especially cannabis and alcohol) and sex play an essential role. Since the AIDS problem determines the plot of the film, it is also referred to as a drama .

The film was controversial when it came out because the protagonists who can be seen having sex every now and then are clearly portrayed as minors, although most of the actors were over the age of 18.

The actors (protagonists are Leo Fitzpatrick , Justin Pierce , Rosario Dawson , Harold Hunter and Chloë Sevigny ) were still laypeople at the time of shooting, whom Clark approached to participate in the film. Some of them later achieved success as actors. Casper's cast member Justin Pierce died of suicide in 2000. The fate of Harold Hunter, who was successful as a skater, but died of a cocaine overdose in 2006 at the age of 31, was similar. Sajan Bhagat (who played Paul), who was born on September 1, 1971, also died of a drug overdose in Atlanta on July 27, 1999.

action

Kids is split into two main storylines that end up as a single thread. Although the film starts with the first storyline and then switches back and forth between the two threads, it is clear from the events that the second storyline must have happened before it chronologically.

Storyline 1

The first storyline describes a day in the life of 16-year-old Telly, whose hobby is deflowering young girls . After he was successful again in the opening scene, he wanders the streets of New York with his buddy Casper, drinks alcohol, smokes marijuana, steals various things from the small goods dealer and then watches skateboard videos from an older scene idol. In the evening, he illegally goes into the local swimming pool with his clique and tries to charm a 13-year-old named Darcy. That same night, a friend has a party where he actually manages to sleep with her.

Storyline 2

16-year-old Jenny is talking to her friends about sex. They come to the point that she has only had sex once - with Telly - while her best friend has had more often. Nevertheless Jenny accompanied them to HIV - antibody test. However, when Jenny picked up the test, the result is positive, which means that Telly must have infected her. Desperate, she wanders the streets of New York trying to find him. She ends up at the party in question, but comes too late - she already finds him in bed with Darcy. The next morning, Casper wakes up and rapes Jenny, who is still sleeping and drugged, without taking any precautionary measures (and thus exposes herself to the risk of infection with the HI virus). The end of the film is open: a scene in which the morning sun shines into the room where the party took place and the young people slowly come to. Casper sleepily mumbles the sentence: "God Jesus - what happened?"

Awards

The film was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the 1995 Cannes Film Festival .

Justin Pierce won the Best Acting Debut category at the 1996 Independent Spirit Awards . The film was also nominated for Best Debut Film , Best Screenplay Debut , and Best Supporting Actress ( Chloë Sevigny ).

The German Film and Media Evaluation FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the title valuable.

Mock continuations

In 2009 the film Kids II - In the Streets of Brooklyn was released directly on DVD in German-speaking countries . Contrary to what the title suggests, this is not an official sequel to Kids , rather the film, which bears the original title Downtown: A Street Tale and originally appeared in 2004, was simply marketed in German under the misleading distribution title , presumably for marketing reasons.

Even the film from 2006 marketed in Germany under the title Kids - In den Straßen New Yorks (original title: A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints ), which is based on a novel by Dito Montiel, has no content with the film Kids of the Year 1995 And apart from the actress Rosario Dawson there are no other connections either - here, too, the misleading German title was presumably chosen for marketing purposes.

additional

The German-speaking rapper DCVDNS released a song entitled "Kids", which is based on the film and contains many allusions.
