action

Los Angeles , South Central: A group of seven Latino teenagers are not impressed by the hip-hop culture in their neighborhood. They listen to punk music, wear tight pants and go skateboarding. They try to avoid the brutality and violence caused by the various gangs in their environment.

The young people decide to take the bus to Beverly Hills High School. There are the "Nine Stairs", a real challenge for every skateboarder. The guys only know her from relevant skater videos. You meet some girls who find the "punks" from the South Central ghetto interesting. They get into trouble with the Beverly Hills police and with the boys from the rich neighborhood, who of course can't stand that their girls have contact with "them". The South Central group evades the police and gets into a fight with the local youth. The Latinos are slowly fighting their way back to South Central, their territory.

Reviews

According to the film service "[the film] largely dispenses with a stringent plot and is limited to semi-documentary observations, with which Larry Clark once again wants to prove his closeness to the youth culture portrayed". In doing so, he had renounced “major staging interventions and stage directions”, which is why “the young people primarily portray themselves, their everyday ghetto life and their small escapes”.

Andreas Busche from filmzentrale.com said: “You can tell by looking at Wassup Rockers that Clark did not pursue a conceptual concept, that he is always only concerned with isolated moments of truthfulness. That is one of the reasons why you sometimes have to give up on his gross follies. Compared to Kids or Ken Park , Wassup Rockers is a rough diamond in the rough. But Clark was never closer to his characters. "
