action

Steve Butler is a successful sales representative at Global Crosspower Solutions, a company that specializes in the extraction of natural gas using fracking. Together with his colleague Sue Thomason, Butler should acquire as many mining rights as possible in a region in Pennsylvania that has been badly hit by the economic crisis . Butler himself grew up in the country and therefore knows the way the rural people think. Believing in an easy job, they set out and can quickly acquire numerous properties, also due to the lack of prospects for the owners. But in a small town they encounter unexpected resistance led by teacher and former engineer Frank Yates. During a discussion, he points out the dangers of fracking to the community. To the surprise of the completely unprepared butler, the community stands behind Yates. So now Butler and Thomason have to visit each property owner individually to change their mind. But they did the math without the pride of the residents, and so the job becomes an ordeal, especially since Yates receives support from Dustin Noble, an environmentalist who has apparently followed Butler. Noble is bribed by Thomason only for pretense and uses the money to run a campaign to inform residents of the dangers of fracking. And so most of Butler and Thomason's attempts to buy the land fail.

But then Global Crosspower Solutions uncovered a scandal surrounding Noble, which destroyed his credibility, so that he was forced to give up his project. Butler then admits to Noble that he is an employee of Global Crosspower Solutions and that he was assigned to control the situation and, with the help of the staged scandal, to convince the citizens that the actions of the anti-fracking opponents are unlawful.

In the subsequent decisive vote on the funding rights, Butler gives a speech to the community. Repelled by the scandalous actions of his employer and overwhelmed by the hospitality and cohesion of the residents, he tells them the truth. He admits that he wanted to buy the land from them for well below the price and that fracking brings real dangers with it. Informed by Thomason on site, Global Crosspower Solutions dismisses butler immediately. However, he finds his way into the house of the teacher Alice, with whom he has become increasingly close friends, with his suitcases packed.
