The 54-year-old sales manager Alan Clay from Boston is supposed to sell a holographic conference call system to King Abdullah in Saudi Arabia. He is under pressure from all sides: Alan wants to finance the college for his daughter, his boss has - in vain - hopes on the relationship with a nephew of the king, which Alan portrays obviously too optimistic, the order in the desert in the Kings Metropolis to be built of Economy and Trade is probably his last chance in senior management. His perspectives as a manager at the bicycle manufacturer Schwinn have been dramatically reduced after the financial crisis and after his personal crises with a failed marriage, a house sold far below value and questionable outsourcing deals . In addition to these problems, he is plagued by jet lag , a cyst on his back, and alcohol abuse.
While waiting for appointments with business partners for days, he met his driver Yousef and the beautiful doctor Dr. Know Zahra Hakeem. Impressed by these encounters and under the influence of the new cultural impressions, the meeting with the king becomes more and more of a minor matter for Alan.

Reviews
“At such moments, when it depicts a once powerful person falling from all the systems that gave him strength, this film is best. His weaker moments are those in which Clay's change is portrayed all too emotionally, his hesitant opening for the rich, beautiful and solitary Zahra as if sent from heaven, especially his final picture, which is built on kitsch. "
“The director Tom Tykwer doesn't even care about political and economic questions of principle. That's lucky. Tykwer sees the excursion into the desert as a research expedition. He lets his regular cameraman Frank Griebe indulge in beautiful pictures [...]. Parallel to this external splendor - by the way, the film was mostly shot in Morocco - Tykwer pursues the soul research of his hero. "
