Julius Müller-Massdorf

Julius Müller-Massdorf , also Julius Müller-Maßdorf (born December 17, 1863 in Düsseldorf , † 1933 ibid), was a German genre and portrait painter and illustrator of the Düsseldorf School .

Life

Müller-Massdorf studied from 1878 to 1883 with Andreas Müller , Peter Janssen , Eduard Gebhardt , Julius Roeting and Carl Ernst Forberg at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . He then went to Munich for private studies with Otto Seitz and Franz von Defregger . From there he made several study trips to the Netherlands in the 1880s and 1890s . From 1891 he stayed in Zandvoort more often . After many years in Munich, he returned to his hometown. In 1928 he was awarded the title of professor at the Düsseldorf Academy .

In the narrative tradition of the Düsseldorf genre painting according to Ludwig Knaus, Müller-Massdorf painted interior, street, park and beach scenes. He also worked as an illustrator, including for Die Gartenlaube . The influence of the Dutch painter Jozef Israëls can be seen in his work . Müller-Massdorf's late work marked a turn to the Impressionist conception of art.
