action

40-year-old Maria lives with her husband Heinz in a frighteningly monotonous marriage. For years the same daily routine, the same carelessness. Maria also has to look after her tyrannical, bedridden father, who lives in the same house and with whom she has a kind of love-hate relationship.

Maria has a secret: when she was a little girl, her nanny gave her an African wooden figure, a fetish. This figure is Maria's confidante. She tells her about her worries, longings and fears, she writes letters to her, which she keeps in a secret compartment. One day Maria's gray everyday life is changed by an event: She falls in love with her neighbor Dieter, a shy, lovable man. But it's too late to start again. Through a series of strange circumstances, the father and husband die, whose body Maria hides in the lower part of the chest of drawers. Dieter finds him and only now understands the full extent of the domestic tragedy.

Reviews

“A debut feature film of oppressive intensity, staged entirely for the visual impact, whose camera-technical ambitions are not always free of mannerisms, but always testify to the author's talent to resolve a story on film. Also convincing acting. "

- film service 3/1994

“A great film, I still like it a lot. But economically it was a disaster. "
