action

The culture presenter Hanna and the art technician Simon have been a couple for 20 years. They have already experienced a lot together (e.g. several miscarriages) and have now reached a state in which they both live more together than with each other. In this situation, Simon is confronted with death in two ways: he himself learns that he suffers from testicular cancer, and at the same time his mother Hildegard is terminally ill with pancreatic cancer . Simon initially hides his illness from Hanna, while Hildegard takes some precautions and then tries to commit suicide. But she is found still alive and taken to a hospital. Hildegard's brain, however, is already terminally damaged. Simon brings her home and accompanies his mother as she dies for a while before turning off the equipment that powers her. Hildegard dies.

At the same time, at a meeting of the ethics council, Hanna met the stem cell researcher Adam, who reports on chimeras there . Due to various coincidences, the two meet again and again, and Hanna is increasingly fascinated by this man. Finally, Hanna spends the night with him. But that very evening Simon had to be hospitalized because of his cancer and had to be operated on that night. He desperately tries to reach Hanna by phone, but she doesn't find out about his operation until the next morning. From now on she is always at his sick bed, but tells him nothing about her affair. Simon leaves the hospital for his mother's funeral and asks Hanna to become his wife after the funeral. She agrees, and shortly afterwards they get married.

But Hanna cannot forget Adam. She finally visits him at his institute and starts an affair with him. Shortly afterwards, Simon meets Adam in a public bathroom. They start a conversation and, completely surprisingly, Adam satisfies Simon in the locker room. Simon is confused, but really wants to see Adam again. After a short time, the two men also begin a passionate affair, during which Simon wonders whether he is homosexual or not. Adam then asks him to part with "his deterministic understanding of biology". This undisclosed triangular relationship has continued for some time, with everyone involved doing very well. At an exhibition opening, Hanna and Simon meet Adam together, which leads to slightly panic reactions in both of them, but not to the realization of the respective relationship with Adam.

Eventually Hanna becomes pregnant without knowing which of the two men is. She visits Adam at home unannounced and discovers her husband's relationship with Adam. Angry and stunned, Hanna leaves Berlin and moves to a friend in London. An ultrasound scan reveals that she is expecting twins, and the doctor explains that it is possible that they came from both men. Later she received an invitation from Simon to the Body Worlds of Gunther von Hagens , because Hildegard made herself available for a plastination . Hanna returns to Berlin and there is a debate. In doing so, Hanna and Simon find that they both miss each other, but also Adam. So they look for him in his apartment. The film ends with all three lying naked in bed with each other.

Trivia

When Adam wakes up the morning after all three protagonists meet, Ingeborg Bachmann's Simultan collection of stories is lying on the bed .
