  • Deutschland 09 is a German episode film from 2009. The “13 short films on the state of the nation” were known as the “major project of the German directing elite” even before they were made and seen as the successor to the collective film Germany in the autumn (1977). The film, initiated by Tom Tykwer , premiered on February 13, 2009 in the framework program of the 59th Berlinale . According to Tykwer, the film brings together "a good dozen individual cinematic views of what we experience today and now as home - and how we locate, get lost, get entangled in this country."

    The film contains 13 contributions by various directors on the subject of Germany in 2009. Each director presents his or her view of Germany today.

    • 1st episode: First day by Angela Schanelec
      A short film at dawn.
    • 2nd episode: Joshu by Dani Levy
      Levy asks people on the street what they think of about Germany. The mood is bad. That depresses Levy. Until a psychiatrist gives him a herbal remedy. When the effects wear off, he just takes another pill.
    • Episode 3: The Name of Murat Kurnaz by Fatih Akin
      Tells the story of Murat Kurnaz , who was held without charge in the Guantanamo Bay detention center from January 2002 to August 2006 .
    • 4th episode: The Unfinished by Nicolette Krebitz
      Helene Hegemann plays a 16-year-old girl who is interested in films. In a strange way, she got through a deep shaft into an apartment in which it is suddenly 1969.     Margret Koehler from Bayerischer Rundfunk called the episode film "crude, contemplative, not politically correct". An "interesting experiment worth discussing from an individual point of view without a fixed framework and without the influence of the editor" was successful. “The makers don't want to be classified politically”, so she concluded her film review. Rightly so, because terms such as “left” or “right” are subject to changing interpretations, should with their one-dimensional slogans have had their day in a time of individualization of mass movements. Today there is a lack of simple summaries and a clear message; the old ideological schemes are obsolete. This is also what "Germany 09" stands for with its weaknesses and strengths. And that's good."

    In contrast, Christian Buss described the film in Spiegel Online as a “sad“ non-stop nonsense ”version of German auteur cinema”. In particular, he rated Akin's contribution as "concentrated kitsch of dismay" and added that the same applies to "Weingartner's conspiracy drama". He chalked almost all of the films "a much too noble look" and described this as "pure masturbation". Tykwer's contribution is "Criticism of globalization as a narcissistic thunderstorm". He only rated the documentary films Stevers and especially Grafs positively. According to Buß, it is to be feared that the Mario Barth vehicle , a man's affair , a film full of "disgusting puns in a disgusting setting", which was launched at the same time, would contain more German presence in one minute than "the 150 minutes of the vainly photographed compilation ".
