Crossing The Bridge - The Sound of Istanbul is a German music film from 2005 and the first full-length documentary by Fatih Akin . The film was selected by the Cannes International Film Festival committee for the out-of-competition film program.

content

The protagonist of the documentary work is the Berlin musician Alexander Hacke , known as the bassist of the Einstürzende Neubauten , whom Akin accompanies on a musical journey of discovery through the Turkish metropolis of Istanbul . From street musicians to Turkish megastars, Hacke captures the diverse, multicultural sounds of Istanbul with a mobile recording studio that he always has with him, and occasionally he also spontaneously makes music with the Turkish musicians.

criticism

Lexicon of international film : The exciting mosaic justifies its transcultural theses only superficially, but with a sophisticated sound track and excellent musicians, it makes known a highly vital underground.

Others

The film was also released on a DVD which, in addition to Crossing The Bridge - The Sound of Istanbul, has a second documentary, Under The Bridge - The B-Side of Istanbul , in which material not used for the main film was cut into another full-length music film.

An audio book was also published with four music CDs for the film, which contain numerous previously unpublished recordings by Turkish musicians, which Hacke made during the filming of the film, as well as recordings that have already been published. The selection for this edition was made by Fatih Akin. The book part is a large-format photo book about Istanbul with pictures that were made during the shooting of the film.

The premiere was celebrated in Hamburg, at which numerous music and TV stars such as Til Schweiger and the Turkish rapper Ceza were present.

Mathias Böllinger saw the film having an effect in terms of increased acceptance of artists and works from Istanbul's jazz and world music scene, also in European cultural columns.
