Baba Zula

Baba Zula is an Istanbul music group that mixes western rock music with oriental music . They describe their own style of music as "Oriental Dub".

The group was founded in 1996 by the singer and saz player Murat Ertel, the percussionist Levent Akman and the darbuka player Emre Önel. The latter was replaced in 2005 by Coşar Kamçı. From 2004 to 2010 the live illustrator Ceren Oykut was part of it. The musicians also work live with singers and belly dancers.

Her first album, Tabutta Rövaşata ( upside down / somersault in a coffin) was released in the year it was founded. Several others followed, as well as soundtracks for Turkish films such as Ice Cream, I Scream (2006).

Baba Zula gained fame in Europe through numerous appearances. In particular, the film Crossing the Bridge - The Sound of Istanbul (2005) by Fatih Akın brought the formation a boost in popularity abroad and international publications on various world music samplers .

In 2017 her double album XX was released on the German independent label Glitterbeat , as it was not allowed to be published in Turkey.
