Orhan Gencebay
Orhan Gencebay (* 4. August 1944 in Samsun , Turkey , civil Orhan Kencebay ) is a Turkish singer, saz - virtuoso and actor. His free interpretation of the arabesque had a decisive influence on Turkish music in the second half of the 20th century. In Turkey he is considered a cult figure and has a wide fan base who Orhan Baba calls him.
He works as a songwriter , lyricist, arranger and producer , has released a number of albums and has appeared in several films. He sold over 65 million records. Gencebay is proficient in many instruments, including the saz . Orhan Gencebay appears in Fatih Akın's documentary Crossing the Bridge - The Sound of Istanbul from 2005.
Life
Orhan Gencebay was born in Samsun on August 4, 1944 . At the age of six he began to learn to play the violin and mandolin . He got his first Turkish lute, the Saz , when he was seven years old. At the age of 13 he learned to play the tanbur , which is one of the four basic instruments of Turkish art music . From 1958 he concentrated more on composing his own works; This year he created his first work, Ruhumda Titreyen Sonsuz Bir Alevsin (German: You are the eternal flame that flickers in my soul ). During his school days he played in various music groups within Turkish art and folk music , gave musical lessons and helped with the construction of people's houses , a state educational project, in Samsun and Istanbul . At the age of 16, Gencebay became interested in jazz , learned to play the tenor saxophone and joined a wind orchestra .
In Istanbul he studied for four years at a music college. During his military service in the Turkish army , he played the saxophone in the military brass band .
In April 2013, Gencebay was appointed by the then Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to a commission called Akil İnsanlar Heyeti (“Council of Wise Men”), which was supposed to support civil society in the peaceful end of the conflict with the Kurdish PKK , which was ultimately ineffective.
