Beyond Istanbul is a studio album by the female German-Turkish DJ İpek İpekçioğlu , also known as DJ Ipek. It was 2006 u. a. awarded with inclusion in the list of the best of the German Record Critics' Prize.

Album information

The CD production, which is subtitled Underground Grooves of Turkey , was released in 2006 on the Trikont record label . In its mix of styles, it reflects the musical diversity of the Turkish metropolis of Istanbul , mixing “Greek, Arabic, Kurdish, Turkish and other sounds wildly mixed up (...), technoid disco tracks with oriental hits or demanding belly dance rhythms” (Daniel Bax). The publisher is now promoting the work with a quote from the daily newspaper : "Here electronic beats are mixed with folkloric elements - a clash - playing with identities and with music - you think that it doesn't go together under any circumstances and then it works after all" . The Süddeutsche Zeitung called the album a visionary "eclectic journey of discovery [...] directly into a country of stark social upheaval, far beyond the clichés and well-known pop exports such as singer Tarkan." The Hamburger Abendblatt spoke of "musical educational work at its best." The music magazine Rolling Stone saw in Beyond Istanbul a "cross section free of blinkers and ideology".

On the album, DJ Ipek mixes pieces of music by folk musicians from Turkey like Şivan Perwer , pop or rock singers like Göksel or Nil Karaibrahimgil to rappers and hip-hoppers like Ceza .

Emergence

The album is based on the monthly "Gayhane" nights of DJ Ipeks in the Kreuzberg scene club SO36 . Some critics also see the album as the direct successor and continuation of Fatih Akin's music documentary Crossing The Bridge - The Sound of Istanbul from 2005.
