Burhan Öçal (born April 25, 1959 in Kırklareli ) is a Turkish percussionist and singer in the fields of jazz and world music , who is now also active as an actor .

Live and act

As the son of an amateur drummer who ran cinemas and theaters in Istanbul and founded one of the first jazz combos, Öçal came into contact with jazz at an early age, but through his mother also with classical Turkish music . He started playing the drums when he was 14 . He left Turkey in the late 1970s to migrate to the USA. However, he stayed in Switzerland for more than 20 years, where he worked with Pierre Favre . As a result, there were performances with musicians from the field of free jazz such as Urs Blöchlinger or Werner Lüdi (album "Grand Bazar", 1988). George Gruntz invited him to his concert band; Peter Giger brought him to his "Family of Percussion" projects. Öçal founded his own groups, in particular the Istanbul Oriental Ensemble , with which he also released albums. He also worked with Maria João , Peter Schärli and Christy Doran , but also with Beyond Istanbul , Joe Zawinul ("Stories Of The Danube"), Wolfgang Puschnig , Jamaaladeen Tacuma ("Groove alla Turca"), Steve Swallow , Pete Namlook , Sting or Saadet Türköz . In addition to Turkish percussion instruments, he now also plays the oud and the saz . In 1992 he recorded the album "Black Sea" with the Crimean Tatar guitarist Enver Izmailov . He is now operating from Istanbul again. Nedim Hazar shot the musical documentary Burhan Öçal / A Musical Homecoming (2003) about him , which was also shown on Turkish television.
