Peter Schärli

Peter Schärli (born May 29, 1955 in Schötz ) is a Swiss jazz trumpeter .

Life

Schärli began playing the trumpet when he was ten. During his apprenticeship as a commercial clerk, he took lessons at the Lucerne Jazz School. While working as a commercial clerk in a machine factory, he appeared from 1974 as a singer, pianist and trumpeter with the blues band "Exodus". Between 1977 and 1981 he attended the “ Swiss Jazz School ” in Bern , from which he graduated with a diploma; During this time there were projects with Urs Blöchlinger and John Wolf Brennan . With Marco Käppeli and Thomas Durst he founded his own trio in 1982, which he then expanded into a quintet in 1984 with Hans Koch and the guitarist Giancarlo Nicolai or the saxophonist Roland Philipp (1987 Montreux Jazz Festival , album Schnipp-Schnapp 1986). From 1988 onwards he went on international tours with his quintet, who to this day regularly works with Glenn Ferris as a guest musician (Germany, France, CIS countries, India, later also Austria and Latin America) and has recorded several albums. In 1994 the Peter Schärli Special Sextet was formed with Ferris, Tom Varner , Dürst, the pianist Hans Feigenwinter and the drummer Béatrice Graf . He also accompanied the singer Sandy Patton , u. a. on albums with his Dont change your hair for me, founded in 1991 with Dürst, Patton and the guitarist and singer Antonia Giordano . He has also performed with Hazy Osterwald , Co Streiff , Hans Kennel , Gabriele Hasler , Dom Um Romão , Werner Lüdi , Rick Margitza , Paul Rutherford , Tommy Meier , Saadet Türköz , Gerry Hemingway and Charlotte Hug . He also worked in various circuses such as the circus theater "Federlos".

Since 1981 Schärli has been teaching at the Lucerne Jazz School or what is now the Lucerne School of Music . Schärli is the son of the former National Councilor Hans Schärli (1925–2014).

Awards

In the jazz polls of the Brazilian daily “Tribuna da Imprensa”, Schärli was voted the best trumpeter in 2006 (ahead of Lew Soloff and Randy Brecker ).
