Willy Kotoun

Willy Kotoun (born February 19, 1953 in Bern ) is a Swiss percussionist (initially Willie Kotoun ). His preferred styles are jazz , latin , afro , R&B , flamenco and free music .

Act

Kotoun accompanied Nina Corti for six years and played in the fusion band Umamaca in the mid-1980s . He also recorded with Jefaster Disaster and performed Donkey Kong's Multi Scream at the Willisau Jazz Festival . He studied Afro-Cuban percussion at the Istituto Superior de Arte in Havana, Cuba. Further study trips to Cuba, Guinea and Burkina Faso followed. Since 1991 he has belonged to the Stephan Kurmann Strings , with whom he performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival , and to the emerging group Cojazz Plus . He was also a member of Bänz Oesters Snow of Tomorrow . With Adrian Frey and Peggy Chew he formed the band Sonic Calligraphy . He can also be heard on albums by David Wildi, Peter Schärli , Alvin Queen & Stjepko Gut and Martin Dahanukar. In the field of jazz, he was involved in 36 recordings between 1984 and 2015.

In 1996, Kotoun developed the Body & Rhythm course to convey rhythmic and physical understanding of African-influenced music. He is a lecturer for percussion and body & rhythm at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences . Parts of the program are taught in Swiss military play and in music schools and conservatories.
