Adrian Frey

Adrian Frey (born April 1, 1958 in Aarau ) is a Swiss jazz pianist .

After his first musical experience with jazz and improvisation, Frey performed in a family atmosphere at the age of 19 at the Zurich Jazz Festival . He then attended the Zurich Conservatory (major in piano , minor in double bass ). The continuation of his studies at the Boston New England Conservatory with Ran Blake , George Russell and Bob Moses influenced his pursuit of his own musical expression. He later deepened his knowledge of Latin American music by spending four months in Havana , where he received lessons in percussion and piano.

In 1995 he released his debut CD with his trio, which then included Rätus Flisch and Tony Renold. In 2001 the second trio CD The Sign followed, with Dominique Girod on double bass and Dominik Burkhalter on drums. Since 1997 Frey has also directed a septet , which in 2004 presented the album Seven Songs with original compositions.

In the fall of 2002, Frey toured China with the American singer Peggy Chew. With this band ( Sonic Calligraphy ) further tours followed in the USA and China ( inter alia, with Willy Kotoun ). In 2004 he represented Switzerland in the Big Band of the European Broadcasting Union . He also played concerts with Hal Crook , Adam Nussbaum , Franco Ambrosetti , Jay Clayton , Mighty Flea Conners , Daniel Schnyder , Reggie Johnson , Julio Barreto , Nat Su , Peter Schärli and Jürg Morgenthaler . He also belongs to Jochen Baldes subnoder, the Zurich Jazz Orchestra and the Martin Streule Jazz Orchestra .

In 2004 his composition Objects & Moments for jazz trio and string orchestra was performed in various cities in Switzerland. He is a professor at the Zurich University of the Arts . Since 2009 he has also taught at the New School and William Paterson University .
