Dominique Girod

Dominique Girod (* 1975 in Winterthur ) is a Swiss composer and double bass player .

Dominique Girod grew up in Winterthur as the son of the mime and movement teacher Ruth Girod and the jazz pianist Roger Girod . From 1993 to 1996 he studied jazz and classical double bass at the Ecole Normale and the American School of Modern Music in Paris with Jean-François Jenny-Clark . Back in Switzerland , he studied classical double bass with Andreas Cincera at the Zurich Conservatory (teaching diploma 1999). At the same university, he studied composition with Michael Jarrell and electronic music and theory with Gerald Bennett (graduation 2007).

As a musician mainly active in the field of jazz and new music , he played bass with Nat Su , Chris Wiesendanger , Christoph Gallio , Dieter Ulrich , Daniel Schenker , Matthias Spillmann , Reto Suhner , Chris Cheek , Kurt Rosenwinkel , Michael Jeffrey Stevens / Miles Griffith , Benny Golson , Jorge Rossy , the Philharmonic Workshop Switzerland and the Ensemble for New Music Zurich . Around 2009 he also founded the sextet "Grünes Blatt", for which he also writes and arranges his own music. Since 2012 he has been playing mostly on an instrument made by the Zurich bass maker Martin Hillmann.

As a composer , Girod writes both jazz and classical music . In addition to various composition commissions, he has dealt intensively with songs , especially Romanian folk songs for his band "Grünes Blatt" . His first opera "l'homme qui rit" (an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Victor Hugo ) was premiered in 2013 by the Freie Oper Zürich in the Rote Fabrik Zürich .

Girod has been teaching double bass (classical and jazz) at the Zurich Conservatory Music School (MKZ) and the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) since 2001 . Since 2008 he has also been teaching music theory there as part of the diploma courses “ DAS Kirchenmusik Chorleitung / Organ”.

Prizes and awards

From 2003 to 2004 Girod received a scholarship from the Landis + Gyr studio for composition in London . In 2014 he received the recognition award for composition from the municipality of Zollikon . In 2015, he was funded by the presidential department of the city of Zurich for his work year for serious music for composition .
