Piet Gros (2010)

Piet Gros (born July 31, 1962 in Dokkum ) is a Dutch chemist and professor of biomolecular crystallography at the University of Utrecht . He is concerned with protein crystallography with applications to large molecules in cell membranes and in blood plasma and of receptors on cell surfaces.

Gros studied chemistry at the University of Groningen with a diploma in 1985 and a doctorate in 1990 at WGJ Hol on protein crystallography ( Studies in protein crystallography & dynamics: on membrane protein crystallization, the structure of thermitase-Eglin and the application of molecular dynamics ). As a post-doctoral student he was at the ETH Zurich (with FW van Gunsteren) and Yale University (with AT Brunger) and from 1994 at the University of Utrecht, where he received a full professorship in 2002. From 2007 to 2010 he headed the chemistry faculty. In 2012 he became Scientific Director of the Bijvoet Center for Biomolecular Research.

He clarified the three-dimensional structure of the complement factor C3. This enabled him to research the mode of action of this complement factor of the innate immune system and he also researched the mechanism of action of the complement factor C8. He also researches various bacterial cell surface proteins that are important for their pathogenicity, and blood clotting factors (such as Willebrand factor ).

In 2010 he received the Spinoza Prize and in 2008 an Advanced Grant from the European Research Council. He is a member of the Dutch Academy of Sciences (2010) and became a Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion in 2013. He has been an EMBO member since 2013. For 2018, Gros was awarded the Gregori Aminoff Prize .
