Teofilo Chantre

Teofilo Chantre (* 1964 on the island of São Nicolau , Cape Verde ) is a Cape Verdean singer , songwriter and lyricist .

Life and work

Teofilo Chantre was born on the island of São Nicolau, part of the Cape Verde Islands. At the age of 13 he came to France with his family , where he lived for 25 years. He wrote his first songs as a teenager.

In 1993 he formed his band and released his first album. With Cesária Évora and Tito Paris , he is one of the country's most important music interpreters. For Evora he wrote the text for the song " Aussencia ", which became the score for Emir Kusturica's film " Underground ".

Chantre also sang with Cesaria Evora and released an album of songs sung in French. He made his most important appearance in Europe at the legendary Olympia in Paris.

His music is mainly influenced by Cape Verdean ( Morna ), Brazilian, African and Cuban music.
