Hans Ludwig von Arnim

Hans Ludwig Hermann Konstantin von Arnim , who mostly called himself Hans von Arnim (born October 12, 1889 in Willmine , † June 9, 1971 in Berlin ), was a German civil servant , church functionary, politician and author . He was in the era of National Socialism member of the Confessing Church and was from 1945 president of the Evangelical Consistory in Brandenburg .

Life and family environment

Hans Ludwig von Arnim came from the Kraatz branch of the Zehdenick line of his widespread family in Brandenburg . His parents were the Kgl. prussia. Secret government councilor and district administrator Ludwig Gustav Otto Gotthelf von Arnim (1860–1936), landlord of Willmine, Arnimswalde and Klein-Fredenwalde, district of Templin , and Helene von Gehring (1858–1933). Since 1921 he was married to Elisabeth Charlotte von Sack (1892–1992).

Professional career

Hans von Arnim studied law at the Universities of Göttingen , Kiel , Grenoble and Strasbourg . In 1909 he became a member of the Corps Saxonia Göttingen . He passed both state law exams and received his doctorate. juris. During the First World War he worked from 1915 to 1918 in the civil administration in occupied Belgium , especially in Brussels in the "Flemish Politics Department". After the war he was a government advisor until 1927 when he joined the Evangelical Church of the Old Prussian Union , in whose administration he quickly rose. From 1933 he was a member, from 1945 to 1960 President of the Consistory in Berlin of the Old Prussian Church Province of Brandenburg and from 1948 of the Evangelical Church in Berlin-Brandenburg .

Political and association political activities

Hans von Arnim also became politically active in 1945. So he joined the CDU and became a member of the founding committee of this party. At the same time he was involved in committees of the Evangelical Church. He had previously been deputy chairman of the Protestant mission to the Jews; now he was also a member of the Evangelical Committee for Israel . He tried to strengthen the cohesion of the West Berlin church organization with the Brandenburg parishes of his district and therefore also became a member of the cathedral chapter college for the Berlin cathedral located in the eastern part of the divided city . In addition, he was chairman of the disciplinary chamber of the Evangelical Church in Berlin-Brandenburg.

Writing activity

In addition to legal writings on canon law, Hans von Arnim also worked as a biographer of important personalities from the Prussian-Protestant area, emphasizing the Christian references and the old Prussian attitude of the people he described. Von Arnim, who did not join the NSDAP , correctly characterized the writings he wrote after 1918 in a declaration of justification to the Reichsschrifttumskammer in 1938 as anti-republican himself.

Honors

Hans Ludwig von Arnim was awarded the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany . He was also a legal knight of the Order of St. John .
