Christoph Gallio

Christoph Gallio (born May 21, 1957 in Winterthur ) is a Swiss musician ( alto saxophone , soprano saxophone ) and composer in the field of free jazz and new improvisational music .

Live and act

Gallio, who lives in Baden, is initially self-taught . He studied saxophone with Iwan Roth at the Basel Conservatory , and music with Steve Lacy in Paris. He completed a master’s degree in transdisciplinarity at the Zurich University of the Arts .

Gallio has formed the Day & Taxi formation with bassist Lindsay L. Cooper and drummer Dieter Ulrich since the beginning of the 1990s , to which Dominique Girod joined the band in 1997 for Cooper and Daniel Studer and Marco Käppeli joined the band. In 2014 he leads the bands Day & Taxi (now with Silvan Jeger and David Meier ), Mösiöblö (with Sylvia Nopper, Marino Pliakas and Thomas Eckert) and Rosen für Alle (with Jan Roder and Oliver Steidle ). He has had a long collaboration with the visual artist Beat Streuli . The most recent joint project is the interdisciplinary performance Road Works (with Andrea Neumann , Ernst Thoma , Dominique Girod and Julian Sartorius ). He became known through his work with musicians from the European free jazz and avant-garde scene since 1977, such as Irène Schweizer , Urs Voerkel , Urs Blöchlinger , Fred Frith , Stephan Wittwer , Robert Dick , William Parker , Rashied Ali and Phil Minton . In 1986 Gallio founded the Percaso label . Gallio also worked in solo, duo and trio formations with Swiss colleagues as well as with Chie Mukai, Matthew Ostrowski, Marianne Racine and Irène Aebi .

Gallio received the action art award of the city of Basel in 1987 and the Berlin studio from the canton of Aargau in 2009 and a work grant in 2012.
