Ivan Roth

Iwan Roth (* 1942 in Basel ) is a Swiss saxophonist and professor of music.

Life

Roth studied music in the class of Marcel Mule at the Conservatoire de Paris and graduated with first prize for saxophone and for chamber music. He is a professor at the Music Academy of the City of Basel and a. Visiting professor at the Utrecht Conservatory , Northwestern University , Boston University , the University of North Texas , the Bremen University of the Arts , the Nuremberg-Augsburg University of Music and the Tibor Varga Academy .

Roth has worked as a saxophonist in numerous symphony orchestras, including the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonic .

As a soloist he performed a. a. with the Basler Sinfonie-Orchester , the Radio Sinfonieorchester Basel , the Camerata Zürich , the Collegium Musicum Zürich , the Basler Kammerorchester , the Orchester des Süddeutschen Rundfunks Stuttgart , the Orchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks München , the Rundfunkorchester des Südwestfunks , the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra , the Orchestra della Scala di Milano , the United States Navy Band , Washington DC, the St. Gallen Municipal Orchestra and the Orchester de Chambre de Lausanne . He is the soprano saxophonist in the Swiss Saxophone Quartet .

Iwan Roth is one of the few well-known concert saxophonists in the classical field. Contemporary composers dedicated around 30 works to him; including Luciano Berio , Paul Creston , Rudolf Kelterborn , Armin Schibler , Robert Suter and Jacques Wildberger .

Roth can be heard on recordings as a soloist with piano and orchestra as well as with the Swiss saxophone quartet. In 1983 he was a juror at the International Music Competition in Geneva . He represented Switzerland at the World Saxophone Congress in Bordeaux 1974, London 1976, Chicago 1979 and Washington 1985.
