Andrea Neumann (* 1968 in Freiburg ) is a German musician and composer . She plays an indoor piano. The instrument is a further development of a piano that she designed, but which does not have a conventional touch mechanism.

Life

Neumann studied piano at the Berlin University of the Arts . Since 1995 she has been part of the Berlin improvisation scene . Since 2000 she has been co-organizer of the “Labor Sonor” series for experimental music, film and performance in Berlin. In 2008 she was a fellow at Villa Aurora in Los Angeles. In 2008 she received an award from the Prix Ars Electronica for the video performance Videobrücke Berlin - Stockholm (5 point 1) in collaboration with Sabine Ercklentz .

Create

Neumann plays on what is known as an indoor piano that piano maker Bernd Bittmann made for her. Inspired by Zeena Parkins ' prepared harp, she designed an instrument based on the piano that consists only of a soundboard and strings . She prepares the piano strings with everyday objects such as forks, razor blades, or potato masher.

The instrument is played not only with the fingers, but also with various types of drum sticks and violin bows . A metal shelf and a mixer are also part of the instrument. The sounds are recorded with contact microphones and pickups for guitars. The electrical amplification of the instrument can be varied during the game using the various possible combinations of the microphones.

In 2005 Neumann co-founded the artists' collective Les Femmes Savantes . This is a so-called “composer-performer ensemble”; other members are Sabine Ercklentz, Ute Wassermann and Ana Maria Rodriguez .

In addition to compositions by the other members of Les Femmes Savantes , she also recorded works by John Cage ( e.g. Waterwalk ), George Brecht, Heather Frasch, Robin Hayward , Phill Niblock , and Chiyoko Szlavnics . Neumann also worked with musicians such as Burkhard Beins , Axel Dörner , Sabine Ercklentz, Robin Hayward, Annette Krebs , Ana Maria Rodriguez and Ignaz Schick .
