Robin Hayward

Robin Hayward (* 1969 in Brighton ) is a British tuba player and composer who dedicates himself to microtonal music and pursues approaches from improvisational and experimental music.

Live and act

Hayward studied music theory and composition at the University of Manchester and tuba at the Royal Northern College of Music . After graduating in 1991, he worked in the music scenes in Manchester and London. He has lived and worked in Berlin since 1998.

Hayward has developed solo programs for the tuba, but also worked regularly with musicians from the Berlin real-time scene and with Amelia Cuni , Charles Curtis and Roberto Fabbriciani . Between 2002 and 2012 he was part of the Ensemble KNM Berlin. Hayward's approach was documented on his solo albums Valve Division, States of Rushing, Nouveau Saxhorn Nouveau Basse and Rubble Master as well as on recordings of various collaborative projects, such as the microtonal Tubatrio Microtub (with Peder Simonsen and Martin Taxt ), the tuba - Double bass duo Reidemeister Move (with Christopher Williams) and the Berlin-based quintet Tonaliens . In 2005 he founded the ensemble Zinc & Copper with Hilary Jeffery and Elena Margarita Kakaliagou , with whom he performed at the JazzFest Berlin in 2017 . In 2016 there were recordings with George Lewis and the Splitter Orchestra . There was also collaboration with composers such as Christian Wolff , Alvin Lucier and Éliane Radigue and with ensembles such as the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin and the Konzerthausorchester Berlin . As a soloist and in ensembles, he has been invited to various international festivals, such as the Donaueschinger Musiktage , MaerzMusik , Fri Resonans, the Festival van Vlaanderen / Ghent, Ostrava New Music Days, Sound Symposium, the chiffren / Kieler Tage für Neue Musik and Wien Modern.

With his work he introduced radical innovations in the playing technique of deep brass instruments , first through the discovery of the "noise valve" and later through the exploration of a comprehensive microtonality of the tuba in 2009. In 2012 he developed the Hayward Tuning Vine , with which the can represent harmonic space contained in the microtonal tuba.

Prizes and awards

In 2012, Hayward received the Clifford Bevan Award for Excellence in Research from the International Tuba and Euphonium Association (ITEA) for his article published in 2011 on the history and formation of the microtonal tuba. In 2016, he received the Jim and Jamie Self Creative Award from ITEA for his work with the microtonal tuba and the Hayward Tuning Vine .
