Alfred Zimmerlin (born April 12, 1955 ) is a Swiss composer and cellist .

biography

Zimmerlin studied musicology and ethnomusicology at the University of Zurich with Kurt von Fischer and Wolfgang Laade, theory with Peter Benary and composition with Hans Wüthrich-Mathez and Hans Ulrich Lehmann . Since 1980 he has been working in the “Workshop for Improvised Music” (WIM) in Zurich . As an improvising musician on the violoncello , he works internationally in various formations. He gives concerts and makes radio recordings in Europe and the USA.

Works

Alfred Zimmerlin's list of works includes around seventy compositions to date. This includes piano pieces, chamber music with or without live electronics, vocal music , orchestral music, musical theater, works for radio and film. His most recent major works are the string quartets No. 1 and 2 and "Weites Land" for violoncello and tape.

Discography

Zimmerlin can be heard as an improvising musician on numerous records , including recordings with the Trio KARL ein KARL, the Tony Oxley Celebration Orchestra, Christoph Gallio , The Great Musaurian Songbook and others. v. a. m. His compositions have been released on the labels Jecklin Disco, RÉR, Altrisuoni and Edition Wandelweiser Records.

  • 2016 nomination for the Swiss Music Prize
