Player is a German film by Dominik Graf from 1990. In the film, Peter Lohmeyer and Hansa Czypionka play the two friends Jojo and Tom, whose lives are characterized by all kinds of streaks of luck and bad luck. The cinema release in Germany was on November 1, 1990.

The two friends Jojo and Tom are notorious gamblers. When Jojo meets his cousin Kathrin again, he falls in love with her. After the death of her aunt, Jojo inherits a dog and Kathrin 20,000 marks. Jojo gambled away the money, but with the help of Kathrin was able to win it back until the policeman Strobeck got in their way and took the money from them. On the flight to the south of France, Kathrin becomes pregnant by Jojo. You can win a lot of money in the casino there, but the French police will track you down. Eventually Tom is killed in a shootout and Jojo blows himself up with his car. At the end, Kathrin can be seen pushing a stroller through the park.

The shooting lasted from August to September 1989. The shooting took place in Munich , Cannes as well as Nice and the surrounding area. The world premiere took place at the Venice International Film Festival on September 9, 1990, and the German premiere at a film festival in Cologne on September 28, 1990. It was generally released on November 1, 1990.

criticism

The lexicon of international films judged the film to be a "lovingly and humorously told cinema story between comedy and tragedy, which condenses a thin script into an artificial game with the narrative principles and 'laws' of cinema". Occasionally the film is "too trying, but for those who recognize the references and role models, it is as amusing as it is stimulating".

Awards

When the German Film Prize was awarded in 1990, the film received nominations for the two main actors Peter Lohmeyer (Jojo) and Anica Dobra (Kathrin). In addition, the film ran in 1990 in the competition at the Venice International Film Festival .
