Fabian is a film drama by Dominik Graf based on the novel of the same name by Erich Kästner , which will be released in German cinemas in the course of 2020. The story takes place in the late 1920s.

In Berlin, in the late 1920s in the last years of the Weimar Republic . The 32-year-old Germanist and copywriter Dr. Jakob Fabian works during the day in the advertising department of a cigarette factory, at night he drifts through underground bars, brothels and artist studios with his best friend Labude, whom he knows from his student days. The film is based on the novel Fabian. The story of a moralist by Erich Kästner from 1931, a so-called city novel with autobiographical features. The protagonist, the Germanist Dr. phil. Jakob Fabian, who works as an advertising copywriter or propagandist, confronts the immoral in Berlin's nightlife. Even when he visits brothels, underworld bars and artist studios, he remains a somewhat distant observer there.
While he looked at many things ironically at the beginning, Fabian developed into a realist in the course of the novel, after he was repeatedly disappointed by people. After meeting Cornelia Battenberg, he begins to work on giving up his pessimistic attitude, only to be disappointed by it when he loses his job. After his friend Labude's suicide, Fabian returns to his hometown Dresden, where he soon drowns trying to save a boy who has fallen into the river.
The novel was filmed in 1979 under the title Fabian by Wolf Gremm , with Hans-Peter Hallwachs in the role of Fabian / the protagonist. The film was awarded the German Film Prize in 1980.

The film was produced by Lupa Film GmbH and was made in co-production with DCM Pictures, ZDF and ARTE. The project received production funding of 450,000 euros from Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg .
Directed by Dominik Graf , who together with Constantin Lieb also wrote the script based on Kästner's novel.
The title role of Dr. Jakob Fabian was cast by Tom Schilling . Albrecht Schuch , Saskia Rosendahl , Michael Wittenborn , Petra Kalkutschke , Elmar Gutmann , Eva Medusa Gühne and Meret Becker can also be seen in other roles .
Filming began on July 30, 2019. Recordings were made in Görlitz , Berlin and Brandenburg until September 2019 .
A theatrical release is planned for the course of 2020 in the DCM distribution.
