The film is based on the novel Fabian. The story of a moralist by Erich Kästner from 1931, a so-called city novel with autobiographical features. The protagonist, the Germanist Dr. phil. Jakob Fabian, who works as an advertising copywriter or propagandist, confronts the immoral in Berlin's nightlife. Even when he visits brothels, underworld bars and artist studios, he remains a somewhat distant observer there.

While he looked at many things ironically at the beginning, Fabian developed into a realist in the course of the novel, after he was repeatedly disappointed by people. After meeting Cornelia Battenberg, he begins to work on giving up his pessimistic attitude, only to be disappointed by it when he loses his job. After his friend Labude's suicide, Fabian returns to his hometown Dresden, where he soon drowns trying to save a boy who has fallen into the river.
