Life
The daughter of a photographer and a teacher completed her acting training from 1987 to 1990 at the Théâtre de L'Ombre in Paris . In the 1990s Knudsen was a member of the theater company FÅR 302 , which was followed by theater appearances at Copenhagen theaters. At the same time she worked in the first Scandinavian film and television productions.
In 1997 she received the most important Danish film awards, the Bodil and the Danish Robert, for the lead role in Jonas Elmer's drama Let's Get Lost . Two years later she won both awards again for Susanne Bier's romantic comedy The Only Right One (1999).
She became known to a larger audience through the role of Helene in Bier's Oscar- nominated relationship drama After the Wedding , for which she received the Acting Award at the Nordic Film Festival in Rouen and was again nominated for a Bodil and a Robert. International fame brought her the lead role in the highly acclaimed Danish television series Borgen - Dangerous Ropes (2010-2013, seasons 1–3), in which she played the fictional first Danish Prime Minister. For her portrayal in L'hermine , she was awarded a César for Best Supporting Actress in 2016.
In April 2020, the Danish broadcaster DR announced that it would be shooting a fourth season with 8 episodes of Borgen, in which Knudsen would again play the leading role. It will be broadcast on Danish TV in 2022, after which it will be broadcast on Netflix.
