In doing so, however, the company undermines the privacy of the population and can thus control almost all interpersonal interactions. action

Young, ambitious Mae graduated with a degree in psychology but was working a temporary job when, with the help of her friend Annie, she got a dream job at The Circle , the world's most influential tech company and social media giant. The company's most important innovation is TruYou : It brings together all of a person's user profiles, e-mail and online accounts as well as payment systems and converts them into a single online identity with which one can log in centrally for all services. The group offers its employees a comprehensive health program that is technically state-of-the-art. Mae's father, who has multiple sclerosis, also benefits from it.

On the company premises, she meets the loner Ty. Later it turns out that he is Tyler Lafitte, inventor of TruYou and co-founder of Circles , of which she had assumed he was hiding. He observes the company's development critically from a distance.

During her induction, the employees make it very friendly but unmistakably clear that she is expected to take part in the company's "voluntary" activities and to record all of her online accounts with TruYou so that all employees can "get to know her". Then she posts more private things, including the picture of a self-made deer antler chandelier by her friend Mercer. Only later does she find out that he was bombarded with hateful comments and therefore withdrew from her.

At first she is not very comfortable with this corporate culture, because in her free time she prefers to go out on the water alone in a kayak to be able to switch off. But at the first in-house presentation, their attitude slowly changes. There, CEO Eamon Bailey demonstrates his latest gadget : a marble-sized camera with a wireless satellite connection that can be attached to any surface and continuously sends video streams to the network. He praises the possibilities that the SeeChange company project opens up: If everyone can see everything at any time, tyrants and terrorists would no longer have a chance. In doing so, he demands total transparency. Mae remains skeptical, but after a kayak accident that she only survived thanks to the wireless cameras, she agrees to wear a body camera around the clock and thus be observed by everyone in the world. Mae quickly becomes the face of the company.

At the presentation of SoulSearch , a new software that, with the help of users, can track down anyone anywhere in the world within just 20 minutes, the CEOs and the audience force them to use the reclusive Mercer as a demonstration object. A real public hunt begins, in which he is followed by drones and filming fans. While trying to escape, he falls off a bridge in his car and dies.

Mae then withdraws from the public and the company to her parents' home. After a few days, however, she decides to return and is asked by Bailey to go on stage at a presentation. With the help of Ty Lafitte and without the knowledge of the other two company founders, she cracked their secret e-mail accounts and made them public during the presentation. Mae proclaims that privacy was only a phase and announces the absolute transparency of all people.

At the end of the film you can see them kayaking accompanied by drones.

production

Background and staff

The film is based on the dystopian novel Der Circle (original title The Circle ) by Dave Eggers from 2013, which tells of a near future. Here Eggers asks whether, in an age of social media and surrounded by modern communication technology, people still have control over who can access personal information that affects their lives. Directed by James Ponsoldt , who also adapted the script for the film.

Cast and dubbing

Emma Watson took on the lead role of Mae Holland. Alicia Vikander was originally supposed to take on this role. In terms of social media and being in the spotlight, Watson sees certain parallels between Mae Holland's life in the film and her own: “Sometimes you feel like it controls me and not I control it. It's getting power over my life in a strange way. I have the feeling that one should gain more distance from the whole thing. Especially since I made the film. ” Tom Hanks can be seen in the role of Bailey, the charismatic founder of the company and the new boss of Holland. His interest in this role became known back in 2014. John Boyega played Tyler Lafitte and Karen Gillan played Annie in the film. As Mae's father, Bill Paxton can be seen in his last film role.

The German synchronization was carried out by Scalamedia GmbH in Berlin . The dialogue book is by Matthias Lange , dialogue director was Cay-Michael Wolf .

reception

Age rating

In Germany the film is FSK 12 . The statement of reasons for approval states: “The film [...] addresses the fascination and allure of a totally networked world in a critical way that is easy to understand for children and young people from the age of 12. Occasionally there are threatening and dramatic scenes that are, however, embedded in the dramaturgy of the story and do not overwhelm people aged 12 and over. "

Reviews

Owen Gleiberman of Variety says the fascist digital future that presents the film is fascinating to watch. Tom Hanks appears warm and youthful in the film and plays Bailey with a disarmingly friendly manner in a mixture of Steve Jobs and Tony Robbins . The moments in the film in which Emma Watson in the role of Mae Holland voluntarily wears a mini camera around the clock seemed like a mixture of Big Brother and The Truman Show , the formats of a surveillance society .

Emma Watson at the premiere for the film in Paris

In a criticism in the Stuttgarter Nachrichten it is said that the committed UN ambassador and women's rights activist Emma Watson is portrayed in the film as a naive, boring and completely unreflective girl, which is quite unbelievable. The complicated love story that begins in the original between Mae and Kalden (in the film his name is Tyler Lafitte) is also simplified in the film, and anyone who has not read the book will shake their head at the changed and rather absurd ending. The film deals with an incredibly important topic, but with a surprisingly poor implementation.

A review by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung also states: “Everything in this film that James Ponsoldt made has the same tone. Without dynamism. That Ty is almost abolished as a character and only plays a marginal role, that another character, the end of which in the book still causes a shudder, is disposed of without a trace, these are decisions as incomprehensible as changing the ending. "

From the German Film and Media Review was The Circle with the predicate particularly valuable provided. In the explanation it says: “In the dystopia , which is settled in a future only a few years away, the privacy of customers is being developed by new technologies that the company 'The Circle' (which is reminiscent of Apple, Google and Facebook) is developing and uses it very effectively, undermining more and more. [...] James Ponsoldt narrates intelligently and maintains a fine balance between the thriller elements and the carefully thought-out vision of a future world in which everyone can see and know everything. "

16 percent of the critics recorded by Rotten Tomatoes rated the film positively. (As of February 22, 2018)

Gross profit

The production costs of the film of 18 million US dollars are offset by worldwide revenues of around 41 million US dollars. So far, the film has had 432,037 visitors in Germany.

Use in school lessons

In spring 2019, the film was presented as part of the SchulKinoWochen in Baden-Württemberg and North Rhine-Westphalia.
