The Celery Virus Y ( scientifically Apium Virus Y , ApVY ) is a plant virus from the genus Potyvirus . It was first isolated in 2002 in plants of the spotted hemlock ( Conium maculatum ) that invasively migrated to Australia . It was isolated in celery ( Apium graveolens ) growing areas in California from two different plant species of the genus angelica ( Angelica , family Apiaceae ), Angelica lucida ("wild celery") and Angelica genuflexa . Its previously proven distribution areas are, besides Australia and North America, New Zealand and possibly Europe.
Experimentally, several plant species of the umbelliferae (Apiaceae), foxtail family ( Chenopodiaceae ) and nightshade family ( Solanaceae ) can be infected. The naturally occurring transmission to umbellifers occurs through the green peach aphid when sucking the sap. Infected plants show leaf chlorosis , stunted and crooked growth.
