action

In retrospect, the journalist David Lipsky describes how he accompanied the writer David Foster Wallace on a promotional tour through the United States for his recently published novel Infinite Fun . Lipsky portrays the critically acclaimed writer for a report for the music magazine Rolling Stone . During the five-day road trip, Lipsky records her conversations about writing, films, music, pop culture and her own weaknesses and mistakes with a tape recorder. In the course of their conversation, a friendship develops between the two men. Lipsky describes the trip as "the best conversation he ever had".

background

In December 2013 it was announced that Jason Segel and Jesse Eisenberg would play the two leading roles. Filming for the film began in Michigan in February 2014 and lasted a total of five weeks. Some scenes were also shot in Minneapolis . The writer's family did not approve of the filming of Lipsky's book.

The film is based on the book "Although of Course You End Up Becoming Yourself" by David Lipsky, which was published in 2010 - two years after Foster Wallace's suicide . Lipsky, a writer himself, was a great admirer of Foster Wallace. David Foster Wallace, who suffered from depression for most of his life , has been considered one of the greatest writers of his generation since the publication of his novel Infinite Fun . The literary source as well as the film capture the point in time when Foster Wallace became famous in the USA.
