Ellar Coltrane (born Ellar Coltrane Kinney Salmon ; born August 27, 1994 in Austin , Texas ) is an American actor .

Life

Ellar Coltrane was born in Austin in 1994 to musician Bruce Salmon and dancer Genevieve Kinney. His parents separated when he was nine years old. He has a half-sister from a later relationship with his mother. Coltrane was home-schooled until the age of 16 and then attended a charter school for two years , from which he graduated with a GED .

As a child, he appeared in a few commercials and had a first small role in the 2002 movie Lone Star State of Mind . In the same year he was cast by Richard Linklater for his long-term film project Boyhood , which was supposed to show a boy growing up into an adult. For the next 12 years Linklater shot a few scenes with Coltrane every year. He was supported by actors such as Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette . The film premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival . In Germany, the film ran for the first time in the competition at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2014 , where Richard Linklater received the Silver Bear for best director .

During the same period, Coltrane appeared in other films, including Linklater's drama Fast Food Nation (2006).

He lives in his hometown Austin.
