Fillmore is a city in Ventura County in the US state of California . It has around 15,000 inhabitants (as of 2010).

The place was founded in 1887 as part of the expansion of the railway network of the Southern Pacific Railroad to the west.

history

In 1769, an expedition led by Gaspar de Portolàs was sent to Upper California , which camped on August 8 in the Santa Clara River Valley , in which the present-day Fillmore is located, and made contact with the indigenous people there.

In the following century, the area became part of the Mexican Rancho Sespe. After the United States took over California in 1848 , the explorer John C. Frémont mapped the valley. The amount of mustard plants was noticeable .

As part of the expansion of their route network to the west, the Southern Pacific Railroad built a coastal route that also ran through the Santa Clara River Valley; the route section there was built from 1886 to 1887. An old freight car served as the first station in Fillmore. The city, which was founded at the time, owes its name to the construction manager of the Southern Pacific Railroad, JP Fillmore. A first planning map was created in 1888 in collaboration with Ventura County . At the time, Fillmore only consisted of the train station, a farmhouse and three cabins. In the early 19th century, the Sespe Land and Water Company, an organization of investors from Los Angeles , acquired a 12,000 km² area of Rancho Sespe for the benefit of the settlement. Fillmore received town charter in 1914.

Demographics

The 2010 census showed a population of 15,002. The population density was 1724 inhabitants per square kilometer.

74.7% of the population said they were Hispanic or Latino , only 22.7% were white. This means that the proportion of Hispanics and Latinos in Fillmore is significantly higher than the average in California of 37.6%. Other minorities such as Asians or Afro-Americans make up only a small part of Fillmore's population.

There were 4,276 households in Fillmore, an average of 3.46 people per household. 63.9% of Fillmore's residents over the age of 25 have a high school or higher education degree, and 14.1% have a bachelor's or higher degree. Both values are below those of the entire state (81.0% and 30.5%), which means a slightly lower level of education. Also, the per capita income stood at 20,703 US dollars below the total Californian comparison value of 29,551 US dollars. However, the proportion of the population living below the poverty line was only 14.3% and thus slightly less than in the entire state. 727 veterans lived in Fillmore .

politics

The city is administered by a five-member city council. It includes Mayor Douglas Tucker, deputy Diane McCall, and councilors Manuel Minjares, Rick Neal and Carrie Broggie.

Fillmore is part of the 19th district in the California Senate represented by the Democrat Hannah-Beth Jackson . In the California State Assembly , the place is assigned to the 37th District, represented by the Democrat Das Williams . At the federal level, Fillmore is a member of California's 26th  congressional constituency , which has a Cook Partisan Voting Index of D + 4 and is represented by Democratic MP Julia Brownley .

Economy and Infrastructure

economy

Before Fillmore developed into its own town, the place existed only in the form of a few businesses that had settled on the railway line running through the place. Orchards were later planted for growing citrus fruits. Today local agriculture is mainly dominated by root crops and avocado plantations . There are also tree nurseries in the vicinity of the city.

The main business center comprises two blocks that contain various retail and service facilities.

The partnership between Fillmore and the Fillmore and Western Railway as well as the location on California State Route 126 has opened the place up to tourists.
