Moorpark was founded in 1887 by Robert W. Poindexter, who named the place after a species of apricot that grew in the area. In 1904 a tunnel through the Santa Susana Mountains was completed, which allowed the Southern Pacific Railroad to build a depot nearby, giving the place a boost in growth.
In March 2005, the remains of a mammoth were found near Moorpark , which probably belongs to the rare genus Mammuthus meridionalis .
Moorpark can be reached via car routes 23 and 118 or via the Metrolink (local train system). The urban area has a size of 49.9 km².
The Moorpark High School football team call themselves Moorpark Musketeers. You play in the Marmonte League.
Moorpark's Little League won the 1996 Western Regional Championships .
