Monterey Park is a city in Los Angeles County in the US state of California , United States , with 60,269 inhabitants (as of 2010 ). The geographic coordinates are: 34.05 ° north, 118.13 ° west. The urban area has a size of 19.9 km².
The motto is "Pride in the past, Faith in the future" ("Pride in the past, belief in the future").
history
Before the Spanish colonization, the area was populated by Tongva Indians. The Indians lived in buildings with cathedral-like structures.
In the early 19th century, the area was part of Mission San Gabriel and later Rancho San Antonio . By 1870, many Tongva had perished from Old World diseases .

In the 1980s, the place was called Little Taipei (Little Taipei). Many stores from Chinatown, Los Angeles opened branches here. As of 1990, Monterey Park has had a majority of residents of Asian descent. Many students in the city these days are second or third generation of Asian descent. English-language signage was enforced by law in the late 1980s.
Since the early 1990s, the Cantonese language has mostly been heard in Chinese shops because Taiwan immigrants are no longer dominant.
As the US- born Latino population declines, new immigrants from Mexico are arriving .
