Paranoid Park is a movie drama by US director Gus Van Sant from 2007. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Blake Nelson , which was awarded the “ Lynx ” literary prize, and is set in Portland , Oregon . It deals with the difficulties of growing up and is almost entirely made up of amateur actors.
action
Alex, a 16 year old skater, lives in Seaside with his mother and little brother and leads a quiet life. In the afternoons he often goes skateboarding with his friend Jared . Alex describes himself as a rather mediocre skater and so he is rather skeptical at first when Jared suggests to try the infamous "Eastside Skate Park", called "Paranoid Park" by the youngsters. Nevertheless, he agrees and the two go to the skate park .
In "Paranoid Park" Alex is approached by a stranger who asks if he would like to take him to the train station to get some beer. Alex agrees. At the train station, the skaters jump on a moving train to ride as train surfers . When a security guard discovers them, runs after them and tries to get the stranger off the train by punching him with his Maglite , Alex hits him with his skateboard. The security guard falls from the moving train and falls onto the parallel tracks, on which he is caught by an oncoming train, severed at waist height and killed. The stranger then flees, leaving Alex alone with the dying man. In a panic, the boy runs away from the crime scene, throws his skateboard into a river and his clothes in the trash, as the blood of the man who was killed can be seen on it.
Soon afterwards, Alex heard in the media that the body had been discovered. In addition, the police officer Richard Liu comes to the boy's school to interview all the skateboarders because the victim was injured with a blunt object "such as a skateboard" near the skate park. Liu immediately suspects Alex, but the police officer does not have sufficient evidence to arrest him.
After the accident, the already introverted boy separates himself even more from the outside world and, on the advice of an acquaintance, begins to write down all the events from his point of view, only to then burn the text. In the end, it remains unclear whether Alex was spotted and whether he plans to testify in front of the police.
background
The shooting took place exclusively in the state of Oregon . The film was shot at Madison High School and Burnside Skatepark in Portland . Filming began in October 2006. The film premiered on May 21, 2007 at the Cannes International Film Festival . Furthermore, the film was shown at several film festivals, including the Auckland International Film Festival , Athens Film Festival , Toronto International Film Festival , Raindance Film Festival , New York Film Festival , Viennale , Hof International Film Festival , Muestra Internacional de Cine , Oslo International Film Festival , Golden Horse Film Festival , International Film Festival Rotterdam , London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival , Transilvania International Film Festival , Midnight Sun Film Festival and the Cinepur Choice Film Festival . The film was shown in US cinemas from March 7, 2008 and in Germany from May 15, 2008. The budget of the film was about 8 million US dollars . On the opening weekend, the US box office took in nearly 30,000 US dollars, and total revenues in the US amounted to a good 486,000 US dollars. Around 4.4 million US dollars were earned worldwide.
The camera was directed by Christopher Doyle , with whom Van Sant worked on his remake of Alfred Hitchcock's feature film " Psycho ". In addition to the traditional plot, the film also contains some Super 8 sequences, filmed by Rain Kathy Li , which show people skating in "Paranoid Park". All young actors were cast via the MySpace Internet portal and are therefore amateur actors .
The director Gus Van Sant can be seen with a cameo in a scene reading the newspaper in the coffee shop . The film was named one of the ten best films of 2007 by Cahiers du cinéma .
Gus Van Sant deals here again with a topic that he already presented in his predecessors “ Elephant ” and “ Last Days ”, the problems of growing up and the increasing isolation from civilization. As usual with Van Sant, the film is not told in a linear fashion, in contrast to the original novel. Some shots are repeated several times in flashbacks. Slow-motion sequences and long shots are also included, as is the voice-over effect common for Van Sant .

criticism
According to the Lexicon of International Films, “Paranoid Park” is “an irritating study of boredom, disorientation and the appalling absence of empathy and morality. Staged casually and confidently and also photographed congenially, the discontinuous narrative structure of the youth drama makes associative approaches to understand the protagonist difficult. "
Ulf Lepelmeier von Filmstarts saw a "film that revels in impressive images in the everyday life of an American youth and, despite all its artistic transfiguration, sometimes loses sight of the actual story being told."
