Maglite (proper spelling MAGLITE even MAGLITE ) is a manufacturer of battery-powered wand flashlights from aluminum , as police -Ausrüstungsgegenstände in the United States become known and often used in movies are seen. The American manufacturer advertises the robustness of its products and offers a lifetime guarantee , except for wearing parts . Only a ten-year guarantee may be offered on the German market.

Anthony Maglica , who was born in New York but grew up in Croatia (then Yugoslavia ), founded Mag Instrument Inc. ( Ontario , California ) in 1974. In 1979 the D-Cell Maglites came onto the market for the first time . The MagCharger rechargeable flashlight followed three years later . Finally in 1984 the small MiniMag came along ; the Solitaire joined the program from the year 1988th

construction

Integrated replacement lamp

A Maglite is made of a aluminum housing made obtained by O-rings splash-proof and with a corrosion-proof switch is provided. The reflector in the front part of the lamp can be continuously adjusted from point to flood light.

Since the inner radius of the adjustable front part of the MiniMag corresponds to the outer radius of the aluminum tube, the unscrewed front part can be used as a stand for a kind of lantern.

Krypton- filled halogen bulbs are used as light sources , with the larger models with baby and mono cells optionally also lighter xenon -filled ones with the brand name Magnum-Star .

There are also special 3-watt light-emitting diode inserts , which were also available in Europe from 2006 to 2010. The light cone can still be focused after the conversion. These lamps were factory-fitted and offered as Mag LED . Second generation LED models with optimized light output are now available, in which a new LED module is permanently integrated and can no longer be exchanged for a conventional filament lamp.

All bulb models and those with the retrofit LED module are supplied with a spare bulb in the end cap, which is protected by a foam insert.

application

In many countries, including the USA , Germany and France , these flashlights are part of the basic equipment, especially for police forces . Maglites are usually handled at the front end and held with the rear end on the shoulder; As a result, the wearer sees fewer shadows, hides his or her own line of sight and is in a more favorable defensive position, since the lamp can be used as a striking weapon if necessary .

On March 30, 2007, however, the Los Angeles Police Department announced that from now on a smaller and brighter flashlight specially adapted to the needs of the LAPD would be used, which cannot be used as a cutting weapon. This was in response to a high public interest incident when a police officer was accused of using excessive force against a suspect using a maglite.

Maglite flashlights are also often used by fire and rescue services, but they do not meet all safety standards because they are not explosion-proof.

Executions

So far there have only been designs for conventional batteries. Versions with lithium batteries are not offered.

Different Maglite models

Maglites come in different sizes:

  • Solitaire (1 × AAA) (Krypton lamp)
  • Mini Maglite AAA (2 × AAA) (Krypton lamp)
  • Mini Maglite AA (2 × AA-Mignon-Batt.) (Krypton lamp)
  • MAG-LED Mini Maglite 2AA (2 × AA) (LED version)
  • MAG-LED Mini Maglite 3AA (3 × AA) (LED version)
  • MAG-LED Mini Maglite 2AA (2 × AA) (LED version with multi-mode switch: stroboscope, dimmer and SOS function)
  • MAG-LED Mini Maglite Pro (LED version with brighter light-emitting diode)
  • MAG-LED Mini Maglite Pro + (LED version with brighter light-emitting diode and 2-stage switch)
  • C-Cell (2 + 3 × C-Cell-Baby-Batt., Earlier also 2–7 × C-Cell) (Krypton, optionally Xenon lamps)
  • D-Cell (2–6 × D-Cell-Mono-Batt., Formerly also 2–7 × D-Cell) (Krypton, optionally Xenon lamps)
  • MAG-LED D-Cell (2–4 × D-Cell) (LED version with exchangeable LED insert and krypton, optionally xenon lamps)
  • MAG-LED D-Cell (2 + 3 × D-Cell) (LED version of the second (now partially third) generation with optimized, permanently installed LED module without the possibility of exchanging filament lamps)
  • MAG-LED ML-100 (2 + 3 × D-Cell) (LED version, driver with dimmer, stroboscope, flashing and SOS function, reduced head diameter and structure)
  • MAG-LED ML-125 (3 × C-Cell or NiMH battery, new operating concept with stroboscope, flashing and SOS functions as well as dimmer, reduced head diameter and structure)
  • Mag-Charger (special NiMH battery) (halogen lamp)
  • MAG-LED XL50 (3 × AAA) (LED lamp)
  • MAG-LED XL100 (3 × AAA) (LED light with motion sensor)
  • MAG-LED XL200 (3 × AAA) (LED light with motion sensor and improved control compared to the XL100)
  • Maglite Solitaire LED (1 × AAA) with greater brightness and longer battery life compared to the version with krypton lamps
  • Maglite MAG-TAC (LED light in tactical design with higher luminosity in a more robust design than the XL series, 2 different versions with different luminosities, modes and designs)

Upgrade modules to LED were offered for the sizes 2–4 × C- and D-Cell (status 12/2010: only available as remaining stock). LED lamps are now available for all Maglites, some from other manufacturers. The light output is in the middle range; the latest LED generations achieve a higher light output with the same electrical power consumption.

The incandescent lamps of the 2-C and D-Cell versions are of the following type: 2.4 ... 2.6 V / 0.7 ... 0.8 A / socket: P 13.5 s / glass bulb in olive shape, Filling gas: krypton or xenon (lighter). The Mini Maglite models use special, unsocketed light bulbs.
