I Can Help ( English for I can help ) is a song written by Billy Swan from 1974. The song appeared in the same year on both a single and on the album of the same name . It was the number one hit in the USA for two weeks at the end of November / beginning of December 1974 and in 1975 also climbed first place in several European countries, such as Germany , Austria and Switzerland .

Soon after, Elvis Presley also recorded the song, which was part of the album Today , published in May 1975 . Billy Swan, who had lived with an uncle of Elvis Presley's for a while as a young man, was deeply touched by the fact that Presley had chosen his song for his next album. Later Swan took its turn to a number of Elvis songs published on his 1999 album Like Elvis Used To Do appeared. It contains 19 Elvis songs, 2 medleys from other Elvis songs and 2 recordings with an indirect reference to Presley: I Used To Be James Dean (one of Presley's idols) and Memphis Rocks (based on Presley's place of residence).

The song was later covered by Tom Jones , Jerry Lee Lewis , Shakin 'Stevens , Ringo Starr and Tom Waits, among others .
