Robert Normandeau (born March 11, 1955 in Québec ) is a Canadian composer of electroacoustic and acousmatic music .

career

After completing his bachelor's degree in composition for electroacoustic music at Laval University in Québec in 1984 , Robert Normandeau moved to Montreal , where he completed his master’s degree in composition (1988) and received his first PhD in electroacoustic composition in 1992 under Marcelle Deschênes and Francis Dhomont . From 1986 to 1993 he was an active member of the Association pour la création et la recherche électroacoustiques du Québec (ACREQ), where he founded the Clair de terre concert series at the Montreal Planetarium. In 1991 he co-founded the Réseaux , an organization for the presentation of media art, in particular for the acousmatic concert series Rien à voir and Akousma . He is a founding member of the Canadian Electroacoustic Music Community (CEC, 1987).

After some interest in instrumental and live electronic works, his current endeavors have been focused on acousmatic music . In concrete terms, this means that his compositions are subject to aesthetic criteria according to which he creates a “cinema for the ears” in which “sense and sound” are the decisive elements that represent his works. Together with these works he deals with incidental music, especially for the theater.

Robert Normandeau has been Professor of Electroacoustic Composition at the University of Montreal since 1999 .

Awards

In 1999 he received the Prix ​​Opus du Conseil québécois de la musique (CQM) award for his recording Figures in the category “Composer of the Year” and in the category “Record of the Year for Contemporary Music”. The Académie québécoise du théâtre (AQT) awarded him twice the Masque Award in the category "Best Theater Music ": in 2002 for the play Malina and in 2005 for the play La Cloche de verre.

Robert Normandeau has won numerous international competitions, including a.
