Joe Alves

Joseph "Joe" Manuel Alves (born May 21, 1936 in San Leandro , California , United States ) is an American film architect .

Life

The son of Portuguese immigrants trained in film architecture at the Chinaurd Institute in California in the mid-1950s and then started his career as a trick assistant at Walt Disney Studios . In 1957 he released two singles under the artist name “Portuguese Joe” on the small label Surf Records , which were commercially unsuccessful. After years as a production designer for the stage and television, Alves managed to enter the movie business.

In 1965 he assisted Hein Heckroth in Alfred Hitchcock's GDR thriller The Torn Curtain and was soon allowed to design decorations himself. Alves' career took off with a brief but very successful collaboration with Hollywood's then 'child prodigy' Steven Spielberg . His designs for his science fiction classic Close Encounters of the Third Kind deserve particular attention. For this achievement he received an Oscar nomination as well as the British BAFTA film award in the category Best Production Design . Since then, Alves has carefully selected his assignments. His creation of a dark, rotting future world in John Carpenter's thriller The Rattlesnake is particularly remarkable .

Alves, who is also the decorations to the first two Jaws -Schockern - including the Hai -Attrappe - had designed, directed the third installment of the film series. In 1984 he worked for Carpenter's science fiction film Starman as a visual consultant and as a director of the second unit team.
