Surf Records was an American record label from Burbank , California, which, under the direction of Kenny Babcocks, released a good 20 singles in the genres of pop and rock 'n' roll between 1957 and 1960 . Contrary to the associative name, Surf Records did not specialize in surf music.

history

The tech entrepreneur Kenny Babcock had had experience in the music business with the square dance label Marlinda Records since 1953 , when he entered the pop and rock market in 1957 with the sister label Surf Records. The first single in red vinyl included recordings by pop artist Jimmy Kerr . He worked closely with his colleague John Marascalco , who, with Portuguese Joe with the Tennessee Rockabillys and Dorsey Burnette, steered representatives of the rockabilly to Babcock's label. Dorsey's song Bertha Lou came out on Surf in a sung version of Johnny Faire . Other surfers included Duke Lloyd and Judy Harriet as well as the country grande dame Patsy Montana .

Surf Records had its own record press machine, which Johnny Faire aka Donnie Brooks used by hand to make his records. In addition, Kenny's wife Margaret was a songwriter and his son Keith was involved in the family business.
